Apple Plans to Launch a Smart Home Display as Early as March 2025

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple plans to introduce an AI-powered smart home display as early as March 2025. The display, roughly 6 inches in size, resembles an iPad but features a square shape instead of a rectangle, with thick borders around the edges. It includes a camera on the top front for FaceTime, built-in speakers for playing music, and an internal rechargeable battery.

Apple will offer versions in silver and black, and it will utilize a touch-based interface. The operating system resembles a hybrid of iPhone's standby mode and watchOS but is primarily controlled via voice. Apple plans to integrate Apple Intelligence to access apps and control smart home products, designed around App Intents, a Siri system capable of controlling apps and tasks.
Apple has designed a customizable home screen with widgets that can display weather, upcoming appointments, photo slideshows, or critical home controls, among other content. A software-based dock will be provided to launch apps, and multiple systems in different rooms will function as intercoms. Apple also plans to focus on security, providing alerts and camera feeds from connected smart home cameras.
Beyond offering smart home control and FaceTime functionality, the device will include several Apple apps such as Safari, Apple News, Apple Music, Notes, Calendar, and Photos, but it won't have a dedicated app store.
Apple intends to position the smart display as a "command center," aiming to further solidify its position in the smart home market. The smart home hub has been in development for more than three years, and Apple CEO Tim Cook has been urging the engineering and design teams to prioritize this device.
