After selling its large-size LCD factory, Sharp is now selling its small- and medium-size LCD factory. Sharp has reached a transfer agreement

On April 2, while Hon Hai's "Made in India" capacity increased significantly, the industry also reported good news. Hon Hai's investment in Sharp announced yesterday that it had signed a contract with Japanese electronic component manufacturer Aoi Electronics to sell part of its Mie Works (Mie Factory) that produces small and medium-sized LCD panels to Aoi, and Aoi will introduce semiconductor packaging production lines.

According to foreign media reports, Sharp announced that it had signed a sales contract with Aoi and planned to sell the Mie Works First Factory with a total floor area of approximately 60,000 square meters to Aoi. Sharp pointed out that the company is transforming its component business (including the LCD panel department and the electronic component department) into a light asset, and this sales contract is part of the light asset plan. Sharp said that in the future, the company will assist Aoi in building a semiconductor back-end packaging production line in the Mie Works through Sharp Display Technology, which is responsible for the small and medium-sized panel business. According to Aoi's business development blueprint, Sharp is also considering selling the Mie Works Second Factory with a total floor area of approximately 83,000 square meters to Aoi.

Japanese media reported that Sharp's Mie Plant consists of four factories. The first factory, which will be used to introduce the semiconductor back-end process production line, has been shut down for nearly ten years. Until 2015, the factory was used to produce small and medium-sized panels for smartphones. Sharp is actively implementing asset revitalization. At the end of last year, it announced that it expected to sell part of the land and facilities of its old LCD panel factory in Sakai City to Japan SoftBank for 100 billion yen (about NT$21.1 billion). SoftBank plans to build an AI data center in the local area.
